New: Civil Records at Berlin State Archive

The search for civil records in Berlin is particularly difficult because of the large number of district registry offices and a missing general name index.
There is also a heterogeneous tradition for the period of Germany’s division by different civil status law in the GDR and West Berlin.
An amendment of the German civil status law PStRG sets a time limit for updating the records by the registry offices and opens the way for a central storage of all preserved civil records since the founding of the Prussian civil registry offices in 1874 at Berlin State Archive. The acquisition of holdings concerning former eastern territories of Germany from “Standesamt I”   is also intended.
